By the bestselling authors of SENTIENT GRILLING, PICNICS FOR BROS, and BOURBON IS A LIFESTYLE (Christopher Kimball, Hunter Lewis, Adam Rapoport, and Sam Sifton), whose new book, DO YOU EVEN ASTROLOGIZE?, is due out at the next transit of Mercury. *
* The following horoscopes are composed of phrases and sentences taken, very much out of context (and very deliberately), from the Letters from the Editor or online newsletters of Christopher Kimball (founder, Milk Street ), Hunter Lewis (editor in chief, Food & Wine ), Adam Rapoport (editor in chief, Bon Appétit ), and Sam Sifton (food editor, New York Times ). There was a time not so long ago when jobs like those belonged to us, when people thought of food as the lowest form of “fluff” in the realm of news, or at best, relating to domestic matters and therefore only of use to housewives. Let the women write of such stuff, they said, throwing us a bone they did not wish to gnaw on. So write we did. We built an entire genre, and for a while, were mostly left to oversee it. Women held the highest editorial positions. Then a funny thing happened. Food took off in a big way; it became a pastime and legitimate form of entertainment, which made it a viable source of ad dollars marketable to men. And then, the men saw that it was good, and wouldn’t you know, soon the names at the top of the mastheads of the country’s major food magazines and newspaper sections weren’t women’s. What will they take from us next? I asked myself. What is left for them to pillage? “Horoscopes,” the stars answered. The signs—and memes—are everywhere—on social media. Astrological content is ripe for the monetizing. For all we know, the guys who dictate cooking trends today may be predicting our futures tomorrow. With apologies to Christopher, Hunter, Adam, and Sam, I have only tried to forecast what lies ahead.

The call issues forth from a child: you’ve got to move fast and in the moment. We’re moving forward. It will get better. But not yet. Last night with the accountant you met at CrossFit wasn’t actually all that good. The suburbs are a study in industrial chaos, buildings and companies sprouting up in a grubby free-for-all. It’s riveting strange and awful. Look today to a battery of tinctures, juices, extracts, and herbs: Concoct a cure-all. It is a way to make you feel better. Don’t forget to wash your hands. Don’t fall down a rabbit hole. Make sure to reach out for help if something goes wrong.

Who knows what boiler-room marketing shenanigans gave rise to these National Days. Whatever you think of the kazoos who herald it, singing loudly along to “Old Town Road” over and over and over again, you should address the fact: Curiosity is more powerful than divisive, isolationist jingoism. Curiosity opens the door to cultural exchange and understanding. One wants to experience the unfamiliar. It’s central to our experience as humans who care for one another.
